2of12: A Feb. 2017 Playlist
What to do with this month's playlist when Future drops two albums in two weeks? I had made my self-imposed ground rules clear: No one project can be represented more than once — each track is meant to be a different sting leading to back to a new work. An artist can appear twice however if featured on someone else's song. At a combined 34 songs though, Future and HNDRXX would represent more than 10 or 20 percent of what I've been listening to if solely as a measure to maintain pace. So what to do?
Regardless of taste or preference, it's hard to argue that in dropping two albums in two weeks, Future didn't command everybody's attention. And that ultimately is the goal of this exercise. To try to crystalize my musical attention, to create a cliff notes of sorts for new releases. So, he's on there twice. He made an impression on Feb. releases and on my listening habits and so that is reflected.
Sampha meanwhile, finished last month's playlist and starts this one with two songs off the same album. So it goes when singles precede an album, and that album happens to move me so. We're 16 percent into this series and while "Draco" didn't make the cut for me, DJ Esco's stiff arm on The Tonight Show was too good not to share.
